Jessica Levings is a registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN) with over 10 years’ experience developing nutrition communications materials and working on regulatory issues around food labeling. Having worked in both public health and the food industry, Jessica understands how to marry the priorities of diverse stakeholders. Before launching Balanced Pantry Jessica worked with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for nearly seven years, focusing on sodium reduction in the food supply and strengthening public-private collaborations, primarily with the food industry. With a Bachelor of Science degree in nutrition from the University of Florida, and a Master of Science in Exercise Physiology from Georgia State University, Jessica is well-equipped to develop and share science-based information on nutrition and exercise.

My husband refuses to go to the grocery store with me because he says I take too long. He doesn’t understand why I have to read every food label on the products I’m considering buying when I end up buying pretty much the same items every time I go. Yes, I do read labels every time I grocery shop, not only because labels and ingredients are something I am genuinely interested in, but because the food label is a one-stop-shop for pretty much everything you could want or need to know about a food product. When my one year old and three year old are with me it’s a little harder to take the time to read labels, even though I try to incorporate them in the process by talking to them about the food and what’s inside. But let’s be honest, at this age they are really just interested in the dinosaur cups for sale on the end cap display and whether or not they have the two-person cart with the steering wheels attached.


I became a dietitian because I’ve always had a natural love for food. I know the ins and outs of the food label, not just because I have worked in this field for more than ten years, but because I read and compare labels every time I shop. I also understand the many barriers consumers have to reading and comparing labels and how some of these issues may be overcome.


Through my work at CDC I learned how to quickly, reliably, and effectively translate scientific findings into actionable, easy to understand messages for different audiences, and the importance of communicating evidence-based information derived from sound science was etched into my work ethic. However, I also learned that even the most well-intended and thoughtfully crafted messages can lose relevance and resonance by the time they reach their intended recipients. These experiences, along with the constant deluge of nutrition misinformation led me to start Balanced Pantry, with the goal of providing reliable and credible information for my clients and consumers.


In my free time, I enjoy running, writing, watching Gator football, traveling, and spending time with my family and friends. I love shopping for food, cooking meals for my family, and answering my friends’ never ending questions about food, nutrition, and exercise. I love teaching my kids lifelong habits that are good for them, and I really love that my three year old has eaten and can recognize all of the fruits and vegetables in her Eating the Alphabet book. I’m training for my third marathon that I’ll run this summer in Montana while my family and I are on a road trip to visit a few of our great national parks.
